Ninth Bobcat to commit to a NCAA school
EAST MEADOW, New York – The New York Bobcats are proud to announce that defenseman Sean Leonard has committed to play and attend school at SUNY Fredonia beginning in the fall of 2016.
Leonard, ’95, like his brother Steven, just wrapped up his two-year Junior career with the Bobcats posting one goal and 17 assists for 18 points in 67 games played.
“I want to thank my parents for giving me all the opportunities I am privileged to have. Not many kids get to stay home and play junior hockey. I want to thank the rest of my family for all their support. Playing for the Bobcats was something I wanted to do for along time,” Leonard said. “Craig Doremus and Kevin Kerr took a chance on me two years ago and I can’t thank them enough for what they taught me. Kevin and Craig believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Bobby DiRico did video with me as much as he could fit it in.”
The Rockaway Park, NY product finished the 2015-16 season with 14 assists in 38 games played for the Bobcats.
“I want to thank everyone who worked at the rink, the billet families and everyone else who supported my team. Playing in the SUNYAC conference had been a dream of mine for a lone time and out of luck a spot opened up at Fredonia. Without the Bobcats and the work put into the organization I could not attend such a good school both academically and athletically
“I am thrilled to be a Blue Devil. Thanks again for all the support.”
SUNY Fredonia competes in the NCAA Division III SUNYAC and is coached by Jeff Meredith, who is now in his 29th season.
“Sean is a prime example of a young man not willing to allow anything to get in the way of his dreams. Sean’s goal was first to make our team, and then to become a regular line up guy and ultimately becoming one of our leaders on and off the ice. He achieved all that and more. Sean’s work ethic, passion and dedication were an inspiration for our entire team, coaches and players alike. He is going to be a very good college hockey defenseman,” said Doremus. “He became a rock for us on the blue line and paired with Charles Barber in my opinion one of the best pairs in our league. Sean is the type of kid who simply makes your team better; there is no other way to put it. We are extremely proud of Sean and his family on committing to Fredonia. We look forward to him getting a great education while playing in the SUNYAC division.”
Leonard is the ninth NCAA commitment from this current 2015-16 roster.
The New York Bobcats would like to congratulate Sean and his family on this wonderful accomplishment.
